A landslide in the 1970s revealed the remnants of a theatre in the Drinos River plain, approximately 15 kilometres southeast of Gjirokastër. Subsequent excavations revealed that the theatre was a part of the Roman city of Hadrianopolis. It was called after the Roman emperor Hadrian (117–138 AD) when it was founded, but it most likely vanished in the sixth century.
The theatre is in reasonably good condition, and plays are periodically held there even now. Remnants of the forum, including the baths, the two churches and the cemetery, have been uncovered nearby.
The unguarded archaeological site is located literally in the middle of fields about a kilometre from the village of Sofratikë, which is crossed by the road between Gjirokastra and the Kakavija border crossing. You can either drive directly to the place with a car or get dropped off from the minibus at the crossroads near the village and walk the rest.
