Velipojë

Velipojë is one of the largest seaside resorts in northern Albania and a popular destination for people from nearby Shkodër. The sandy beach stretches for several kilometres from the mouth of the Buna River to the naturally valuable Vilun Lagoon. It has also been the scene of rapid building development, which has given rise to dozens of hotels, restaurants, bars and discos.

The formerly small village of Velipojë has become a throbbing resort every summer, where Albanians from the north of the country and Kosovo come most often. The sandy beach itself is almost completely filled with umbrellas in summer. Although the situation has improved a lot in recent years, litter is still a problem in Velipojë.

The western end of the beach, near the border with Montenegro, is quieter and less developed, although new hotels are starting to appear there too.

If you’re looking for an even more peaceful spot, head to the charming Rrjoll Beach, which remains half-empty even in summer. The most beautiful place to stay here is the Sunset Apartment, accessible via a private footbridge that crosses the lagoon directly to the beach.

If you tire of lounging by the water, the Velipojë beach is just a stone’s throw from the Buna River Delta Nature Reserve to the west and the Vilun Lagoon (Laguna e Vilunit) to the east. Both places are perfect for birdwatching, and the lucky ones might even spot turtles that come to lay their eggs on these protected sandy beaches. This is the northernmost part of a wetland system that stretches along nearly the entire length of Albania’s Adriatic coast.

Minibuses run regularly from Shkodër to Velipojë, and the drive takes about 30 minutes by car. A newly opened coastal road now connects Velipojë with the resort town of Shëngjin. At the highest point of the route, there is a viewpoint offering a breathtaking view of Rana e Hedhun – the most beautiful beach in northern Albania, spread out below like a postcard.
