Flag’s Square in Vlorë

Flag’s Square (Sheshi i Flamurit) is a prominent location in Vlorë honouring the 1912 declaration of Albanian independence.  A massive monument commemorates the occasion that saw the first official raising of the Albanian red flag with a black eagle. The most significant historical building of Vlorë, the Muradie Mosque, also stands in the square.

The date of the flag hoisting (November 28, 1912) is inscribed in the minds of Albanians as Flag Day (Dita e Flamurit). It is celebrated every year as the most important national holiday. Today, an Independence Monument stands on the site of the house where the flag was first raised. It consists of a bronze sculpture placed there in 1972 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of independence. It depicts, among others, the first Prime Minister Qemali and revolutionary commander Isa Boletini.

Opposite the monument stands the most important historical building of the Vlorë, the Muradie Mosque (Xhamia e Muradies). Built in 1542 by the architect Mimar Sinan, it features typical Ottoman architectural elements, with a rectangular shape and a prominent dome. The Muradie Mosque, named after Sultan Murad II, who ruled the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, and adjacent park has undergone some tasteful renovations.

Behind the Independence Monument, the wall ruins of the ancient city of Aulon are located. They date back to the 5th or 6th century BC.

The Justin Godard Street leading from the Flag’s Square marks the former old town of Vlorë. The street has recently been converted into a pleasant pedestrian zone with some cafes, restaurants and gift shops. Not much else of the old town remains besides this street.
