For those without the time or desire to venture as far as to Theth, Kelmend, or the Valbona Valley, the village of Razëm (also Razma) can offer a taste of the Albanian Alps. Its value is precisely in its accessibility; a good asphalt road leads there, and it is only approximately 40 km from Shkodër.
Thanks to its location more than 1000 m above sea level, it is a popular destination, especially for Albanian visitors who come here to cool off during the hot summer days. In the low season, the village is largely quiet and few people visit. The place is ideal for winter sports such as cross-country skiing, ski mountaineering or snowshoeing. There are several guesthouses and a hotel resort.
The usual hike from Razëm leads to the adjacent Veleçik Peak (1727 m). The route is not difficult in terms of orientation or terrain, and shouldn’t take you more than five hours there and back. Even the Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha is said to have climbed the peak once. From the top, there are spectacular views of Shkodër, Skodra Lake and the Montenegrin capital Podgorica. A map with the GPS route can be found here.
