The Church of St. Nicholas (Kisha e Shën Kollit) in Mesopotam dates back to the 13th century and is one of the most beautiful places of worship in Albania. It is the only building that has survived from the former Mesopotam Monastery, now it’s surrounded only by cypress trees and remnants of defensive walls. Together with the nearby Blue Eye spring, it is a great destination for a day trip from Sarandë.
The monastery got its name because of its hilltop location between the Kalasa and Bystrica rivers. Namely, in Greek, mesopotam means “between the rivers”.
The church was built in 1224 on the site of a former Greek temple. The limestone blocks used in the lower part of the church very likely come from the nearby ancient city of Phoenice, the upper parts are made of bricks. On some of the blocks, pre-Christian reliefs of animals such as a lion, an eagle or a dragon strangling with its tail can be seen.

The church resembles a fortress: narrow windows are located under the roof, and one of the walls is reinforced with a massive supporting pillar. As part of the monastery, the church was enclosed by perimeter walls that are still standing.
The church is double-aisled, with two domes on each of the naves and a sole central column supporting the whole structure. It is believed by experts that the church had two altars and continued to serve both Catholics and Orthodox long after the Great Schism in the 11th century.
The church is located about 12 kilometres from Sarandë, the drive should take about 20 minutes. You can also take a bus or minibus running between Sarandë and Gjirokastër. Inform the driver that you want to go to the Mesopotam Church, and you’ll be dropped off at a suitable point. It is about 500 metres from the road.
TIP: In addition to the church, the famous Blue Eye spring is located ten kilometres away and is accessible via the same road between Sarandë and Gjirokastër. Plan to see both attractions during your trip.
