There are practically no tourist sights in the industrial city of Fier. History lovers can visit the museum which exhibits ethnographic and archaeological objects, mostly from nearby Apollonia. At their own risk, adventurers can explore the abandoned power plant.
Around 70 per cent of the exhibits in the history museum come from archaeological sites near Fier, especially from Apollonia. There is also a room dedicated to World War II and the power struggle of Albanian partisans against the fascists. The pride of the museum is a heavy machine gun on display.
In the main square of Fier, you will find modern cafés and restaurants offering Albanian specialties. The city is known for its hospitality and vibrant atmosphere, especially in the evening when the promenade along the Gjanica River fills with locals.
South of the city, there is a vast area of the former power plant. The view, which is reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic film with its decrepit buildings, trash, and scrap metal, has a sinister beauty all its own. You can also tour the abandoned fertiliser factory located in the site’s northern section.
WARNING: The most interesting main building of the power plant with boilers and generators is still guarded by a security guard from the transformer station next door, which is still in operation.
