The remarkable Tren Cave (Shpella e Trenit), located at the westernmost point of Little Prespa Lake, is most known for its prehistoric paintings that show three hunters and four hounds pursuing a deer. These drawings were made by people who lived in the area approximately 6,000 years ago during the Iron Age.
Visiting this place is nowadays only for die-hard archaeology fans. The cave is freely accessible, resulting in numerous vandal graffiti. Moreover, the paintings are almost covered with soot from the fires lit by sheepherders. The cave has its charm in winter when freezing water dripping from the ceiling creates beautiful icicles.
The Tren Cave is located in the gorge separating the Small Prespan Lake (Liqeni i Prespës së Vogël) from the Devoll River valley. If you take the main road from Korçë, about three kilometres before Billisht, turn off at the village of Buzliqen. Then it’s about four kilometres on asphalt.
TIP: You can get a nice view of the reed-covered Little Prespa Lake if you follow the asphalt road from the cave towards the village of Rakickë.
