The Val Cave (Shpella e Valit) is an exceptional natural monument reminiscent of a Gothic cathedral located on the border of Mirditë and Mat regions. It remains widely unknown to most of the travellers and Albanians as well.
The name of the cave refers to the Albanian word valë, which means a wave. The people who gave this name are said to have been inspired by the topography of this area of Mirditë, where ravines and steep ridges alternate in regular “waves”.
The interior of the cave is 20 to 25 metres high and the distance between the eastern and western entrances is about 100 metres. You won’t need flashlights, as plenty of light enters the cave through the 15-meter-wide “roof” opening.
The cave is located near the village of Përlat, which is on the asphalt road between Rrëshen (Mirditë region) and Burrel (Mat region). At Përlat, turn onto a decent gravel road leading to Lura Lakes (to be asphalted soon) and leave the car about two kilometres farther – near the farmhouse, from which it is a 1,5-kilometre walk uphill to the cave. The entrance to the cave is from a natural amphitheatre. GPS route here.
Having not enough, you can continue from the cave along a marked path towards the village of Bruç. You will pass three more caves along the route.
TIP: While you’re in the area, explore the nearby Uraka Canyon. It’s not a long drive from the village of Bruç.
